Moving with a furry friend to a new home? When trying to make the move as stress-free as possible for your pets, experts agree: Try as much as humanly possible to maintain a sense of normalcy.

That’s easier said than done, especially in the noise and stress and chaos of packing and planning for moving day. Besides updating their medical records, finding out the pet regulations at your new home and keeping your pet up to date on vaccinations, as much as you can, to keep things even keel. Try to both shield your pet from the chaos by having a friend pet-sit at their place a couple of days and slowly introduce things like kennels and crates that will be inevitable parts of their lives once they hop into the moving truck with you.

Above all, do what you can to reassure your pet, through sticking with routines and a little TLC, that you’re there for them and that things are going to be alright. Animals pick up on stress very quickly, so they know something’s going on. The trick is not to throw them for a loop by changing everything all at once.

Once you’re at your new place, walk through the new neighborhood with your pat as they get accustomed to their new surroundings. Having you there, leash in hand, will help them get used to the lay of the land more quickly as you both adjust to your new home!
